Public art has been a feature of travelling on Tyne and Wear's public transport for 25 years. The Art on Transport programme, originally established by Tyne & Wear County Council when the Tyne & Wear Metro was under construction, has provided over 40 artists' commissions for permanent and temporary work. It is nationally recognised for the quality of its work and the benefits it brings to the travelling environment. Metro stations, bus interchanges and even a multi-storey car park are among the sites where the work of contemporary artists have been integrated into their development. Nexus, the Passenger Transport Executive for Tyne and Wear who run Art on Transport, acknowledges that working together for a better environment and an improved quality of life is everybody's business. Through the services we provide and by seeking to improve the quality of our facilities, Nexus recognises that art in public places is a vital component in creating and sustaining lively communities and creative towns and cities.
