Nexus recently helped the MetroCentre to access Central Government funding to pay for a revamped public transport interchange for Europe’s largest shopping centre. The project is called CentreLink and links the MetroCentre to the Metro system. It has four main elements: - A refurbished transport interchange in Gateshead town centre
- Busways (bus-only routes) between the town centre and the MetroCentre
- A new public interchange at the MetroCentre
- New modern, low floor, high capacity vehicles
The bus route from Gateshead Interchange is now fast, direct and avoids the congested A1. With iconic ‘bendy buses’ the route can guarantee journey times of under ten minutes door-to-door. The CentreLink bus service (x66) is operated by Go North East - see bus operators.
