Nocturne is one of Britain’s biggest works of art which involves lighting up QEII Metro Bridge with a kaleidescope of different colours. Nocturne is a unique commission by artist Nayan Kulkarni who, working with Nexus engineers, has created an ever-changing colour and light installation on the 360-metre QEII Metro Bridge between Newcastle and Gateshead. State-of-the-art low-power LED lighting and a new colour scheme and transform the bridge into a new landmark at one of the busiest gateways to Tyne and Wear – but it consumes less power than the average family home. The huge scale of the bridge has made the £317,000 plan for Nocturne one of the largest permanent art installations ever attempted in the UK. The project took shape alongside the scheduled £1.7m repainting of the bridge last year by Nexus - something which must happen every 12-15 years - minimising the cost involved. The finished work will be seen by more than eight million people who use the neighbouring King Edward VII railway bridge every year, as well as millions more road users and visitors to the Newcastle-Gateshead quaysides and surrounds.
