We completed a £1.2m modernisation and upgrade of Pelaw station in Gateshead in May 2006, with a vastly improved enclosed waiting area and modern passenger information replacing the previous facilities. The opening of the Sunderland Metro line in 2002 has made Pelaw a major interchange for passengers travelling between South Tyneside and Sunderland, and this project meets their needs. The station has 1.3 million passenger journeys a year, 380,000 of which are people changing trains. The distinctive arched roof and glass waiting area is a step change in quality and the first of its kind on a suburban station. The ticket area and walkways to surrounding streets have all been upgraded creating a new local landmark. Pelaw Metro interchange is served by local bus routes allowing people in the surrounding areas of Wardley and Leam Lane to access it easily.
