Nexus has invested £600,000 renewing the grade II listed station building at Whitley Bay, providing a brighter, safer cleaner environment for passengers. The historic glass roof canopy has been fully restored using the original plans from 1910, the station concourse repainted, new tiles laid on the floors, signage improved and new lighting installed. A new portico has been built on to the rear entrance of the station and the shop unit will be completely refurbished. Planning permission for the scheme was granted by North Tyneside Council and the work took six months to complete. It was the third phase of a five-year redevelopment scheme at Whitley Bay station.
