Nexus is working with Sunderland City Council on a congestion-busting bus priority scheme that will reduce bus journey times and boost reliability for passengers.
Work is due to start in February 2008 on improvements to Chester Road in Sunderland in a circa £400,000 scheme, funded through the Tyne and Wear Local Transport Plan.
When it is complete the new ‘Superoute’ will boast a sequence of bus priority measures to smooth journeys for thousands of commuters all the way into the city centre from the west.
In the peak period up to 40 buses an hour use Chester Road carrying almost three million passengers a year.
The improvements to Chester Road comprise amendments to the Kayll Road-Ormonde Street junction, the conversion to traffic signal control three existing pedestrian crossings, the provision of a contra-flow signal controlled bus lane and a review of existing waiting and loading restrictions.
