Nexus is to install 249 new ticket machines, accepting notes and credit/debit cards as well as coins at all stations, from early 2009. At the same time ticket control barriers will be installed at 13 main stations to crack down on fraud.
The new ticket machines will give passengers the convenience and quality they expect, and open the way for smartcard ticketing in the future
This £14.3m project forms part of Phase One of Metro Re-invigoration, a £600m plan to renew and modernise the whole network. It is funded by Nexus and a £12.9m grant from the Department for Transport.
