A £250,000 project will replace the ageing pedestrain ramp between Monkseaton Metro Platform 1 and Front Street with a landscaped path and short flight of stairs. The current ramp, part of a larger footbridge built in 1915 and since mostly demolished, is structurally unsound. It is also too steep for manual wheelchair users and provides difficulty for ambulant disbaled people and parents with baby buggies. The new path will provide a level access from Platform One curving round to meet existing footpaths onto Front Street. A short flight of stairs will lead up to the end of the current road bridge. Landscaping, the cutting back of undergrowth, new fencing and lighting will ensure this provides an accessible, safe and attractive approach to the station, which is used by more than a million passengers every year.
