Scores of Tyne and Wear youngsters will miss out on cheap public transport during the school summer holidays unless they get a Nexus Under 16 card, transport body Nexus has warned. Young people aged under 16, who hold the Nexus Under-16 Card, can not only use it to get cheap travel to and from school but also as an ID to get cut-price travel on a range of public transport, including the Shields Ferry, buses and the Metro during the school holidays. But take-up of the pass has been low, with just 40 per cent of school-age youngsters carrying one. Nexus says that although young people are entitled to cheaper fares than adult passengers, many in the 14-16 age group miss out as they look older than they really are and have no proof of age. However, youngsters carrying the Nexus Under-16 Card can use it as proof of ID, ensuring they get their cut-price travel entitlement. Nexus is encouraging youngsters to apply for its Under-16 Card, which costs just £3 and is valid until the holder turns 16. Commercial Director for Nexus, Andy Bairstow said: "The Under-16 card makes lots of sense for young people using public transport. "Rather than risk having to pay full fare they can simply slip the card into their pocket and use it as proof of age. "That will ensure they get the reduced fare, leaving them a bit more pocket money to have fun with. "At just £3, the card is cheap and easy to get. All under 16s need to do is fill in an application form and attach a passport photo. "They can pop along to any of our Travelshops for leaflets and further information and collect an application form there as well as having their ID verified."
