THE Metro and Shields Ferry will be taking the strain this weekend when they carry tens of thousands of extra passengers and spectators to and from the world famous Great North Run. Scores of extra trains and ferries will operate throughout the day, coping with the thousands of additional passengers heading for the start of the race, Tyne Bridge and to vantage points along the route to the finish at South Shields. Extra staff will be on hand to assist the crowds, especially at Haymarket and South Shields. And, with a range of extra services and tickets, the Metro and Shields Ferry are the ideal ways to avoid the limited parking and road closures on Sunday 26th September. Andy Bairstow, Commercial Director for Nexus, the operators of the Metro, said: "Great North Run day has always proved to one of our busiest. It's a carnival atmosphere and we see many tens of thousands of people using Metro to get about because it's quick, safe and reliable." On Sunday, Nexus will be providing the following: Metro Extra Metro trains will be running throughout the day. The nearest Metro station to the race start is Haymarket and South Shields is nearest to the finish line. If you need to use a car for part of your journey, you can Park and Ride from the Metro stations marked with a 'P' on the Metro map. Shields Ferry The Shields Ferry between North and South Shields will operate extra crossings and will run from 10.15am to 6pm. Buses will operate between the ferry landing and Metro station in North Shields. Shuttle Buses Shuttle buses will operate as required during the day as follows: Bents Park Road, South Shields (by the finish line) to central Newcastle initially, then to Heworth Metro once roads are closed for the race. South Shields Metro station and South Shields Ferry Landing to Bents Park Road and return. Baggage Buses Baggage buses are available to leave your bag. Buses are numbered and will depart for the finish line before the race start. Tickets Metro - the ticket machines at South Shields Metro station will be very busy at the end of the race - Nexus advises customers to buy a Return or DaySaver from the ticket machines on their outward journey. Metro DaySaver - for unlimited travel on the Metro and Shields Ferry all day on Sunday 26th September. Adult £3.20, child £1.00. Select a DaySaver on any Metro ticket machine. Metro WeekendSaver - the same validity as the DaySaver, but for Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th September. Adult £6.00, child £2.00. Available from Nexus Travelshops at South Shields and Central Station, or from the Nexus stand at the Great North Sport and Fitness Show. Return - Prices from £1.00 to £3.10 for return Metro travel depending on where you are travelling to/from. Select a Return on any Metro ticket machine. If you are travelling by more than one form of public transport we recommend you purchase a Day Rover or Explorer ticket. These provide all day unlimited travel on the Metro, buses*, Shields Ferry and Newcastle/Sunderland** rail line.
