Metro passengers get cash and mobile top-ups on the go

Story added: Tuesday 14 September 2004

METRO PASSENGERS running short on cash can now get it on the go from ATM machines appearing on stations across the network.

And commuters in a rush can also top-up their mobile phone at the same time, thanks to an auto-debit facility built in to the machines.

Metro operator Nexus has teamed up with the Co-operative Bank to install cash machines at a clutch of key Metro stations.

So far, ATM machines have been installed at Jesmond, West Jesmond, Haymarket, Monument, Heworth, Gateshead and North Shields and Park Lane Metro stations.

In addition to allowing Metro passengers to withdraw cash, the ATM machines allow Co-operative Bank and Nat West customers to top-up their pay-as-you-go mobile phone.

Nexus says the ATM machines fitted so far are the just the first batch, with more to be fitted later in the year, although details are yet to be finalised.

However, later this month (September), Nexus expects a Woolwich ATM cash dispenser to be installed at Central Metro Station and situated in the concourse area of the station, next to the change machine.

Andy Bairstow, Commercial Director for Nexus, said: “The addition of the ATM machines at these Metro stations is great news for passengers, who now won’t have to trudge off to a cash-point for their money.

“Also, being able to top-up their mobile phone will be a great boon for people, again saving them a trip to a shop for a token or to swipe their card.

“There are more ATM machines coming later in the year so Metro passengers will be able to grab cash and mobile top-ups at even more locations.

“It’s all part of what we’re doing to make public transport increasingly attractive and useful to people."
