Metro savings help commuters spend their money on something more exciting

Story added: Monday 11 October 2004

METRO passengers can save a massive £200 on a year’s travel anywhere on the system.

Operator Nexus is reducing the price of its popular All Zones Annual MetroSaver in a move that will give holders of the card the cheapest Metro travel available.

From today (Mon) - and for the fifth year running - the Tyne and Wear Metro All Zones Annual MetroSaver is reduced in price by a massive £200, on top of the great savings the card already brings.

That means the card is on sale for just £325.

So for just £325 you can leave the car behind and wave goodbye to traffic jams, and there’s no need to queue at a ticket machine - simply hop-on and go anywhere you like.

An All Zones Annual MetroSaver equals total freedom of the Metro system for £6.25 a week - saving commuters and regular Metro users more than enough cash for those designer jeans or that surprise weekend away.

Andy Bairstow, Commercial Director for Nexus, said: "Last year thousands of people took up the reduced price offer and have enjoyed unlimited Metro travel for the whole year.

"The special offer MetroSaver is available from October 11 to November 6 and can be purchased from any Nexus Travelshop. Current MetroSaver holders can also renew on-line at www.tyneandwearmetro.co.uk.

"The Metro is ideal for commuters - there are 58 Metro stations serving Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, North Tyneside and South Tyneside. There are stations at the heart of both Newcastle and Sunderland city centres, so getting around by Metro couldn’t be easier.

"The Metro is convenient, fast, frequent and easy to use. Services run from 6am until after 11pm and there are trains on average every four minutes at peak times on the section between Pelaw and South Gosforth.

"And it’s certainly cheaper than running a car. According to an RAC survey earlier this year, the average cost of running a car is £101.15 per week ." Just look at the benefits:

Unlimited Metro travel on the entire system for a year.

The special price of £325 (compared to the normal price of £525) works out at just 89p per day - nearly £95 a week cheaper than using a car*

Saves you time - no more searching for change at ticket machines or queuing to renew your pass every week or month.

Valid for use on the Shields Ferry and the Newcastle to Sunderland rail line.
