The children, from St Cuthbert’s Roman Catholic Primary School in North Shields, entertained Metro passengers at Monument Station to raise money for a missionary priest working in Africa. The children had all given up lunch breaks over the past couple of weeks to rehearse for the Metro performance. Their efforts paid off as they raised £90 in just 30 minutes. In all, 30 youngsters aged 8-11 from the school choir went through their Christmas carol repertoire to help Fr Francis, a friend of the school who visited children there in 2001. Fr Francis stays in touch with the school and recently told Head Teacher Michael O’Brian he needs cash to pay import duties on a motorbike to get him around his lakeside parish in Tanzania. Mr O’Brian said that, previously, children from the school helped Fr Francis buy a boat to reach parishioners. Andy Lee, Head of Media and Public Relations, said: "The children were very good indeed. You could really tell they’d been practising hard and passengers really enjoyed hearing the carols. "We allow schools to come and sing carols at Monument every Christmas as it gives the school a chance to earn money either for charity or something the school needs, and it helps make passengers’ Metro journey pleasant."
