NEXUS, the people behind the Tyne and Wear Metro, today (weds) confirmed that an ongoing dispute with Metro unions over pay and conditions is close to being resolved. After extensive negotiations, the trade unions and Nexus have agreed that employees will receive 2.7% in pay rises (effective from last October) with a further rise of 3% from October 2004. This equates to 5.7% over 2 years. Metro workers will now also work a 36 hour week on a self financing basis. After a four hour meeting today (weds) Union leaders will now be recommending this deal to their members Ken Mackay, Director of Metro, said: “We are very pleased that this dispute is close to being resolved. “This is the end of a very long road for us and has involved much hard work on both sides. We are pleased that our passengers should not now face any further disruption and that our Metro staff will enjoy a good pay deal and improved terms and conditions.”
