Director General of Nexus, Mike Parker, will speak at a Regional Government debate next week and advocate increased transport powers for the region. As Director General, Mr Parker controls the Tyne and Wear Metro, Shields Ferry and support services for public transport across Tyne and Wear. He is also a member of Cfit (the Commission for Integrated Transport) which advocates congestion charging as a means of traffic restraint and as a driver of modal shift to public transport. Mr Parker has been invited to participate in the debate “The Future of Transport and Strategic Planning in the North East” at St James’ Park on Monday at 6.30pm. Recently Mr Parker presented Nexus’ position in a report on regional government to members of the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Authority, who scrutinise Nexus and decide policy, where it was endorsed by the authority by majority vote. In the report he asked the authority: “to welcome proposals for a Regional Assembly as contributing to a better and more strategic approach to public transport in the region and; “should a positive vote be achieved in the November 4th referendum, lobby government for an increase in transport powers from the resultant bill.” FULL COPY OF REPORT at www.twpta.gov.uk agenda item 11 September 23rd 2004. Mr Parker will join Yes and No delegates at Monday’s debate which is being organised by the Transport Planning Society in association with the Royal Town Planning Institute and Institution of Civil Engineers Northern Branches and NECTAR.
