Concessionary travel is available for everyone under the age of 16 who lives in Tyne and Wear. Under five's go FREE Accompanied children under the age of 5 can travel free in Tyne and Wear. Schoolchildren Children aged 5-16 can enjoy reduced fares on local bus services, Metro, Shields Ferry and Northern Rail local rail services from Sunderland to Blaydon. Concessionary fares are available all day, including weekends, to holders of Nexus Under 16 Cards. The single fare is 50p. A new ticket - the Under 16 Child All-day Ticket or 'Cat' offers all-day travel across public transport in Tyne and Wear for £1. This ticket can be bought from bus drivers or Metro ticket machines. Operators will still charge a commercial child fare if you don't have an Under-16 Card. Under 16 Card To be entitled to child fares an Under 16 Card must be shown at all times. Children who are aged 5 to 15 on 31 August before the start of the current academic year and who live in Tyne and Wear can apply for an Under 16 Card. How to apply for your travel pass All Under 16 Cards are issued by post. You have a choice of how to apply for your pass - either by post or in a TravelShop. If you apply by post, please send us photocopies of your proof of address, not the originals (Nexus accepts no responsibility if original documents are sent). Send your application to: Concessionary Travel Bureau Nexus Grainger Chambers 3-5 Hood Street Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 6JQ Special envelopes addressed to Nexus are available in Nexus TravelShops for you to use to send your application to us. However, if you choose to drop your application into a TravelShop, you can take originals of your proof of address. The TravelShop staff will check it and hand it straight back to you. They will then send your application to our Concessionary Travel Bureau for your pass to be issued. Most TravelShops also take passport photos for £3.00. Your Under 16 Card will be posted out to you within five working days of us receiving your application (however delays may occur in September, so parents are urged to apply as soon as possible). What do I need to send you? You will need to send us the following - Completed application form, signed by the child’s parent or guardian
- A colour passport photo (please write the child's name on the back)
- Proof of the child’s age
- Proof that the child’s permanent address is in Tyne and Wear
- A stamped self-addressed envelope
The following documents are acceptable as proof (one for age, another for address): - Proof of age – passport or birth certificate
- Proof of address – parent or guardian’s council tax bill, gas bill, electricity bill, phone bill
- Proof of both age and address – Child Benefit Award letter (if you have lost this, contact the Child Benefit Helpline on 0845 302 1444) or medical card (can only be used as proof of address too if it’s up to date)
I’ve lost my pass – what do I do? If you think you lost your pass while using public transport, please contact the appropriate operator. Call Traveline on 0871 200 22 33 if you are unsure which operator’s service you were on. If the operator has not found your pass, you will need to complete a new application form. A replacement Under 16 Card costs £3. You will need to send us the following: - Completed application form, signed by the child’s parent or guardian
- A stamped self-addressed envelope
- £3 (cheque or postal order made payable to Nexus if posting, cash can be paid at any travelshop)
The photo on my pass is from years ago – can I get it changed to a more recent one? You can update the photo on your pass if you would like to. You will need to complete an Under 16 Card application form. There is a £3 charge to update the photo on your pass. You will need to send us the following: - Completed application form, signed by the child’s parent or guardian

How to use your Under 16 Card - On buses – show the driver your pass when you buy your ticket
- On Metro – press the appropriate child button on the ticket machine before paying
- On train – you can buy your single ticket from the conductor or a ticket machine. Transfare tickets must be bought from a ticket machine
- On ferry – show the ferry operator your pass when you pay for the ticket
School Pass School Passes allow you to pay for school journeys in advance so there is no need to find change for fares every day. The passes are available for journeys within Tyne and Wear and can be used on all local public transport services in the county, including bus, Metro, Shields Ferry and Northern Rail local rail services from Sunderland to Blaydon. School Passes allow you one free journey to school before 9.30am and one free journey from school to home between 2.00pm-6.00pm.
