About the Concessionary Travel Scheme The Tyne and Wear Concessionary Travel Scheme provides free or reduced price travel for Tyne and Wear residents aged under 16, 60 and over and those with certain disabilities.
Details of the fares available are shown below. For full details about how to apply for passes to show that you’re entitled to these fares, see In This Section. Please note Children aged under 16 who do not live in Tyne and Wear should pay the commercial child fare at all times. If you are aged 60 or over, or are disabled, and do not live in Tyne and Wear, you can travel free of charge on local buses in Tyne and Wear between 9.30am and 11.00pm Monday to Friday and all day at weekends if you have a National Concessionary Bus Pass. If you don't have a National Concessionary Bus Pass, or are travelling on Metro, the Shields Ferry, or Northern Rail services between Newcastle and Sunderland, you should pay the adult fare at all times.
