Traffic will be restricted to local buses and taxis only (not coaches) with cyclists restricted to using the shared footways.
Due to safety considerations, a 20mph speed limit has been imposed and a three tones gross vehicle weight limit is also in place. There will be a width restriction of 11ft 5ins. The bridge will be signed as a “Weak Bridge”. Newcastle and Gateshead Councils have installed traffic cameras and electronic traffic monitoring equipment which will measure the weights of vehicles while in motion, record speeds and vehicle registration plate details to ensure compliance.
This information will be passed on to Northumbria police so that the appropriate action can be taken against those motorists engaging in any illegal activity.
A Newcastle City Council spokesperson said “It is critical to safety that drivers do no attempt to illegally drive over the bridge. The electronic surveillance systems are designed to catch transgressors and the restrictions will be rigorously enforced”.
