Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Authority (the PTA) regularly reviews policy and is committed to updating its Passenger Transport Policy Statement every three years. Following a successful stakeholder consultation process, the new statement for the period 2007/08 to 2009/10 has been approved by the PTA and finalised for publication. Since the publication of the last policy statement, economic regeneration, social inclusion and access to services have been reinforced as major public policy issues. In the same period, concern for the environment, particularly with regard to climate change, has risen markedly up the political agenda. Public transport has a significant role to play in all of these areas. The ambition of the PTA is to ensure a good quality public transport system in Tyne and Wear and to attempt to influence the objectives of the wider City Region. If that can be achieved, the PTA will have gone a long way in satisfying its overarching objectives of: - Actively promoting the use of better public transport as a real alternative to travelling by car and thereby contributing to reducing road traffic congestion;
- Reducing transport-related social exclusion;
- Protecting, preserving and enhancing the natural and built environments; and
- Assisting in stimulating economic regeneration.
